Before this season, the most flu deaths seen locally since 2012 was six. "It's not too late to get vaccinated against the flu and we want to encourage those who have not been vaccinated to take advantage of this opportunity".

The Spokane Regional Health District has recorded 430 flu-related hospitalizations for the 2017-2018 season, higher than any past year since the district started recording the statistics in 2009.

A mother-of-two, 38, has died from the flu while a 12-year-old boy has been taken off life support after battling the deadly virus.

"Most people who get the flu end up getting damage in their lungs that then allows them to have a bacterial infection overgrow and cause a pneumonia that kills them", Dr. Haselow said.

New research from Canada, however, has revealed that this year's flu vaccine is 14% less effective than originally thought, meaning that it is just 20% effective against the dominant H3N2 strain. Why is this season's flu so nasty?

That raises the inevitable question as the United States battles its way through another severe flu season - could a pandemic as devastating in scope occur in the future?

From 120 to 2,000 die from complications of flu, according to estimates, the website states.

"Sometimes kids have chronic health conditions to begin with and so they have a lot less reserve than otherwise say, an adult, who's otherwise a healthy adult male or female".

According to their website, the only situation where a person can not receive a flu shot from Health & Wellness is if they are under 18 or pregnant.

And while not every flu victim has lab work done, Adrianne O'Brien, a nurse practitioner with the Green Valley Fire District, is seeing plenty of people with flu-like symptoms in Green Valley and Sahuarita.

Officials of Aurora, Illinois, close a Catholic school, while those of Atlanta, Georgia, and NY recommended citizens to wear masks, to use germicide sprays to clean their hands and to avoid crowdy spaces.
