Officials say firefighters broke through ice on a New York City pond with their hands and went chest-deep into the water to try to save an 11-year-old boy who fell in, but the child later died.

Perez and the unidentified child were walking on the frozen pond at about 4:05 p.m. when it cracked and he went into the water about 50 feet from the shore. Carmen Rivera, 51, who stays on the floor below of Perez's family, said, "He's [Perez] friendly with a lot of people". He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition where he was later pronounced dead. "Make sure your kids know the ice in the city of NY, on these lakes and ponds that are out, they are not safe". One of them shimmied out, got his bearings, and then focused on a figure under the water and pointed him out. "He's not shy and he loves to help". He'll be in my prayers. "It's a shame that something bad has to happen to this kid", added Coraci.
