Who should replace Patriots OC Josh McDaniels?

Who should replace Patriots OC Josh McDaniels?

In the last week, McDaniels had further talks with the Colts leadership but it was all a formality, at least reportedly, to discuss the transition of leadership and how things would work out after the Super Bowl.

Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia became the new head coach of the Detroit Lions on Monday and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was named head coach of the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday.

McDaniels also was 11-17 as head coach of the Broncos from 2009-10.

But there will be no finger pointing at the offense when it comes to the Patriots Super Bowl loss.

And in Sunday's Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Brady, despite the loss of speedy receiver Brandin Cooks, threw for a record 505 yards.

The conspiracy theory was that if Belichick is leaving the Patriots, McDaniels may want the job.

I asked ESPN Patriots reporter Mike Reiss, who has covered McDaniels and the team for many years, for some insight into the next Colts coach.

The Colts have a franchise quarterback, a ton of cap space, and the No. 3 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

He will have some skeptics based on what happened in Denver, but this is a good situation for McDaniels, provided that quarterback Andrew Luck is healthy.

The Patriots have lost both their coordinators to head coaching positions. While there are some concerns about Luck's health, McDaniels must have confidence that he will be ready for next season.

Schuplinski, who joined the Patriots in 2013 and has spent the last three seasons as assistant QB coach, was expected to be an in-house candidate to replace McDaniels at offensive coordinator.

However, Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots' all-world tight end, virtually confirmed McDaniels' pending departure.
