That's a huge and potentially scary number for Facebook - its goal, after all, is to get people to use more Facebook and see more Facebook ads - but company CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been warning this moment would come, and he's argued that in the long run, it'll be beneficial. "In 2018, we're focused on making sure Facebook isn't just fun to use, but also good for people's well-being and for society".

"We made changes that reduced time spent on Facebook by roughly 50 million hours every day", Zuckerberg said in a statement accompanying Facebook's Q4 earnings on Wednesday.

Last quarter, the company started showing fewer viral videos, he said.

Zuckerberg previously said the change could lead to a drop in user engagement and time spent on the platform, but would ultimately improve the quality of the user experience.

Victor Anthony, an analyst with Aegis Capital Corp., said he does not expect the News Feed changes to significantly reduce Facebook's revenue.

Sales hit almost $13 billion for the quarter, an increase of 47% from the same period a year earlier. Less time spent usually means there is less money coming in as a result. Facebook is altering the formula that determines what shows up in people's news feeds to favor status updates from friends and family that spark more meaningful social interactions.

The tech firm, which has been under pressure to do more to combat misinformation and offensive posts, has been grappling with criticism that social media is tearing people apart rather than bringing them closer together.

On Monday, January 29, Facebook News Product head Alex Hardiman and News Partnerships head Campbell Brown announced an update that will place trusted local sources atop News Feed.

"Some of those issues are going to have an effect on the business", Wieser said.

Facebook, which has more than 2 billion users worldwide, said it's prioritizing trustworthy, informative and local news. What actually matters in determining if Facebook is a buy now is whether it can continue its torrid MAU, revenue, and EPS growth.

"I don't think there will be much impact from the News Feed changes on how advertisers think about Facebook". If those results sound borderline impossible, particularly for a company Facebook's size, its third-quarter results support the idea that they are within a reasonable range.

"Several former Facebook "news curators", as they were known internally, also told Gizmodo that they were instructed to artificially "inject" selected stories into the trending news module, even if they weren't popular enough to warrant inclusion-or in some cases weren't trending at all", the site reported.
