Authorities believe they have found body of missing NC child

Investigators believe they have discovered the body of 4-year-old Raul Gonzalez Johnson, and say he may have accidentally drowned in a pond near his Scotland County home.

Raul Gonzalez Johnson, 4, was reported missing on Wednesday, last seen walking down a road near his house while his grandfather was babysitting him, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation, who joined the search Friday.

They are waiting for the Scotland County Medical Examiner's Office to confirm the identity and cause of death.

An FBI spokeswoman said in an email that authorities would begin draining the pond Saturday. They say went Raul went to the home of a neighbor, who told him to go home.

The FBI's evidence response team is heading to the scene, authorities say. The little boy was reported missing on January 24 after he wandered away from his family's Laurinburg home while barefoot. The decision to drain the pond came from Scotland County Sheriff Ralph E. Kersey, who said that it was a "top area of interest" after three search dogs went to the same area, according to the News & Observer. But Kersey and another investigator said they had met Raul previous year so they knew what he looked like. "He came to me yesterday morning and said, 'Please don't go to work.' And I told him I had to go to work".

Law enforcement officers blocked local roads to check IDs, and more than a dozen ground search teams made up of emergency responders participated. The FBI and SBI have joined the effort in an attempt to locate the missing boy. "We greatly appreciate the thoughts and prayers for this little boy".

"Johnson is described as an Indian boy around 3'0" and 38 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
