West Coast gets prime view of total lunar eclipse

The subtlety named Super Blue Blood Moon is coming to a nighttime sky near you on January 31, and you'll be seeing red if you miss it as it hasn't occurred in over a century. Blue Moon A blue moon occurs when a single month hosts two full moons.

If the weather gods co-operate, the total lunar eclipse on January 31 is one of them.

"This eclipse is going to be happening right about the time the moon is setting here in New Jersey". Well, even without the supermoon, it is the first blue moon-total lunar eclipse in the United States since March 1866, according to Earthsky.org. As a result, the moon appears with a faint copper or blood red colour glow. Adding to the naming confusion, this full moon was also known as the "snow moon" by some Indigenous tribes. Usually this means we get one full moon and one new moon each calendar month.

31, there will be another full moon, a "blue moon".

While lunar eclipses are visible anywhere at night, unlike solar eclipses, some viewers will not be able to see the entire event because it starts near moonrise or moonset.

Science enthusiasts now have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness a super blue blood moon in Kozhikode in Kerala. January's first full moon occurred Jan. 1. Passing through the Earth's inner shadow, the Super Moon will take on a red appearance.

The eclipse will last nearly 3 ½ hours from the beginning of the partial phase at 3:48 a.m. PT until it ends at 7:12 a.m. PT, according to Sky and Telescope. Typically, a Blue Moon will appear once every three years or so. When this happens, the normally bright white moon will take on a reddish tint. The sight will be from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning. Hunter's Moon The Hunter's Moon is the full moon following the Harvest Moon; which means that it is usually in October, except for when the Harvest Moon occurs in October - then, the Hunter's Moon happens in November.
