Pakistan, US must work together to defeat terrorism, says Aizaz

The Trump administration subsequently suspended almost $2 billion in security assistance to Islamabad until it takes "decisive action" against alleged Afghan militant sanctuaries on Pakistani soil.

Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Pakistan has assisted the USA in its fight in the war on terrorism, providing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) with supply routes into landlocked Afghanistan after the USA invasion, Bloomberg reports.

US and Pakistani officials say neither has happened, and in conversations over the past week the two sides have tried to move past Trump's incendiary rhetoric.

On Friday, Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa told US Central Command Chief General Joseph Votel during a telephone call that Pakistan "felt betrayed" by criticism over its efforts in the war on terror.

Army Chief, General Qamar Bajwa has said that Pakistan wouldn't ask for restoration of the financial assistance suspended by the United States and will continue its whole-hearted efforts against militancy and terrorism even without U.S. financial support in accordance with our own national interest. "No more!" he wrote in his New Year's Day tweet, referring to Pakistan.

The statement further added that the top US General also conveyed COAS that US is not contemplating any unilateral action inside Pakistan but is seeking cooperation to tackle Afghan nationals who, in US view, use Pakistan's soil against Afghanistan.

Chris Hemsworth and Margot Robbie's quiz show battle

It merits mentioning here that ties between Pakistan and the U.S. worsened after Trump on January 1, in his first tweet of 2018, said that Washington has got nothing but "lies and deceit" from Pakistan despite providing it more than $33 billion in aid since 2002.

Spokesman Colonel John Thomas said Centcom is in "continuous communication" with the Pakistan military, including recurring conversations between Votel and Bajwa.

A top American general has told Pakistan's army chief the USA military does not intend to conduct any unilateral strikes inside the country and both sides emphasized the need for continued cooperation to fight terrorism, an official announcement said Friday.

Some U.S. and Afghan officials anxious that Pakistan would retaliate by no longer sharing intelligence or raising the costs for U.S. -led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces to use Pakistani air and land corridors into Afghanistan.

The Pakistani assertion that Votel said no unilateral action inside Pakistan was being considered may have referred to the possibility of cross-border United States drone strikes and other military missions targeting Taliban and other militant figures outside the border area.

Also in question is nearly $1 billion of U.S. military equipment that has allowed Pakistan access to advanced military technology.
