Ilini remain winless in Big 10 with overtime loss to Iowa

It took the third largest comeback in school history, but the end result was the University of Iowa men's basketball team's first Big Ten victory of the season.

Iowa fell behind by 20 points at IL, before coming back to win, 104-97 in overtime.

IL needed a miracle to get the game to overtime and got one when Trent Frazier hit a body-twisting, off-balance 3 from in front of the Illini bench as time expired.

Jordan Bohannon scored 29 points to help Iowa rally from a 20-point deficit for a 104-97 overtime win over IL on Thursday night.

The first half belonged to Tyler Cook and Jordan Bohannon for Iowa.

Iowa shot 50 percent from the floor and hit 33 free throws in 40 chances compared to Illinois' 11 free throws in 14 chances.

Despite Fraizer's big shot, the Hawkeyes had the rhythm, the Illini did not.

Over on the IL side, they're sitting at 10-7 this season.

Iowa is 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 road games and 1-3-1 ATS in their last five Thursday games. Frazier entered play with 16 made three-pointers on the season, and Frazier made 7 threes and finished with 27 points.

The Illini committed 31 personal fouls, and that's where their biggest hit came from - three members of the IL squad fouled out, so the team was limited come overtime. The Illini offense was good for 1.4 points per possession in the half, with Kipper Nichols was again clutch from the bench, racking up double-digit scoring early on, scoring 11 after 12 minutes of game time.

In the overtime period, Iowa took control of the game and made sure IL would not come back again. Garza scored 17 of his 19 points in the 2 half and overtime.

Iowa's second-biggest comeback took place on January 14, 1987, also in Champaign, Ill.

Black's departure stunted Illinois' offense this time around while Iowa kept attacking. The Hawkeyes trailed by 23 points (38-15) with 13 seconds remaining in the first half in an eventual 65-56 win over Gardner-Webb in 2012 and trailed by 22 points (61-39) with 16 minutes left at IL in 1987 in a 91-88 overtime triumph. The Illini managed the first two in Saturday's loss at MI, but the fact that Mark Smith, Trent Frazier and Te'Jon Lucas combined for 14 of the Illini's 17 turnovers in the 10-point defeat certainly didn't help their cause.

It would have been easy for Iowa to mail it in in the second half.

He averaged 5.1 points and 5 rebounds while getting 19 starts as a freshman last season. Garza finished with a double-double. Daniel Kinchen led the Cougars with 14 points and Brandon Jackson recorded 12 points, 10 in the first half. "When Luka came in, he came in with energy and confidence".

Iowa's 104 points are its most in a Big Ten game since 1995 against Northwestern (W, 116-77).

Iowa returns to actions Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Rutgers. He made 7 of 11 3-point attempts. After halftime, IL only forced 6 additional turnovers from Iowa. Black and Aaron Jordan added 18 points each. He had played well up until that point, and he was looking for the opportunity. The Hawkeyes have lost their last three games, most recently falling to Maryland on Sunday.
