French President holds panel discussion on climate change in China

The project is a third-generation reactor and one of the most advanced in the world in terms of nuclear safety and performance. In a speech at Daming Palace, the former royal residence during China's Tang Dynasty, Macron noted that the ancient Silk Roads were never only Chinese.

The two leaders witnessed the signing of dozens of agreements covering areas including environmental protection, finance, agriculture and people-to-people exchanges.

Beijing and Paris should also nurture new highlights for growth, such as agriculture, medical care and sustainable development, Xi said.

China stands ready -he added- to work closely with France to enhance cooperation including that under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.

President Macron also confirmed that he and his Chinese counterpart have discussed sales of Airbus A350 and the A380 superjumbo jet, with China still maintaining its order parity with Airbus and American rival Boeing.

Among a string of business deals with China Macron secured during his visits, cooperation deals on nuclear and aviation were framed as means to tackle climate change by some Chinese observers.

The visit has been widely covered in China, and Mr Macron is seen as representing Europe as much as France. It is also his first trip to the country since assuming office in May past year.

European leaders increasingly are pressing China, the most closed major economy, for such reciprocity in response to frustration among labor unions and business groups about mounting Chinese competition.

Xi, who had already hosted Macron and his wife Brigitte for dinner on Monday night, treated the French leader to a military honour guard at the hall before their meeting.

Xi'an is located in landlocked western China.

In light of the USA announcing its exit from the Paris climate accord, Macron stressed that China had a major role to play on climate change.

Despite the Brexit referendum, Catalonia's push for independence and the broader rise of populist parties, Duchatel said that now - more than before - governments in Europe are voicing concern about China's trade practices.
