Armed robbers steal jewellery 'worth millions' from Ritz hotel in Paris

During the robbery, the gang of five smashed the window of a jewellery store at the hotel with axes and looted the pieces on display, Xinhua reported.

The publication is reporting that three of the five men have been arrested, though it is unclear as to whether the jewels have been recovered.

"The loss is very high and remains to be assessed", one police source said.

A police spokesman said three suspects were arrested but two escaped following the robbery at about 6.30pm on Wednesday.

A source said: "The attackers used axes to smash open reinforced glass cases containing jewellery while filling bags".

But thieves struck again in March 2016, when an estimated six million euros worth of jewels were stolen from luxury fashion brand Chopard by robbers who threatened employees with a gun and grenade.

"Two others got out the back door of the hotel and were seen running away, and then getting on mopeds".

A witness told Sky News they heard multiple rounds of gunfire. It was at the Ritz that Diana, Princess of Wales, spent her last night in 1997 before the auto crash that killed her and her lover Dodi Fayed, son of the hotel's owner Mohammed al-Fayed.

The five-star Ritz is one of the French capital's best-known hotels.

The hotel, owned by Mohamed Al Fayed, reopened last year after four years of refurbishment work.
