US Democratic senator releases Fusion GPS testimony in Russian Federation probe

The transcript, of an interview that Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson did with the Senate Judiciary Committee, was released on Tuesday by the committee's top Democrat, Sen.

When published by BuzzFeed News in January 2016, the 35-page intelligence dossier made several explosive but uncorroborated allegations that the Russian government held compromising information, or "kompromat" material, on then-Republican presidential candidate Trump.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein released a transcript of the interview on Tuesday, after repeated disagreements with Republicans on the committee.

Feinstein said she released the transcript to set the record straight.

"Diverting our focus from Russian interference to Glenn Simpson or Christopher Steele is, in our view, a misallocation of scarce resources", they said.

The congressional panel is one of three investigating Russia's activities in the election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

They also complained that focusing attention on the firm or the former British spy Christopher Steele, who compiled the dossier, is a distraction.

Simpson had previously declined to answer another question posed by the committee's investigators, citing "security". Russian Federation has denied allegations of election meddling and Trump denies any collusion by his campaign with Moscow.

Feinstein made the transcript public over the objections of Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, who called the move "confounding" in a statement shortly after Feinstein made it public. "Her action undermines the integrity of the committee's oversight work and jeopardizes its ability to secure candid voluntary testimony relating to the independent recollection of future witnesses, " said the spokesman, Taylor Foy.

"Essentially what he told me was they had other intelligence about this matter from an internal Trump campaign source", Simpson said. The source said that Simpson's mention of an internal Trump campaign source actually refers to the Australian ambassador who contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation to pass on information that he received from former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos.

In a statement, Fusion GPS said it "commends Sen".

Democrats on the committee said they were not consulted ahead of the Republicans' referral to the Department of Justice.

Feinstein's decision came after a tense back-and-forth between Republicans and Democrats over what to do with the transcript of Simpson's interview, which he provided on August 22. "Feinstein for her courage".

Simpson told investigators that Steele is "basically a Boy Scout", saying he has worked with Steele on and off since 2009 and he knew him to be "a person who delivered quality work in very appropriate ways".
