Red Cross urgently needs blood donations

Donations have been down across the country due to severe winter storms in some areas and the usual holiday season slowdown.

"Last week's massive winter storm had a significant impact on our blood supply with blood drives cancelled from SC to ME", said Chris Hrouda, president, Red Cross Blood Services. More than 150 blood drives were forced to cancel because of it, causing over 5,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected.

CLEVELAND- The American Red Cross is facing a winter blood shortage and is pleading for blood and platelet donations. The American Red Cross says these affected more than 28,000 fewer donations than needed in November and December.

All blood types are needed to help ensure a sufficient blood supply is available for patients - especially platelet and type O negative and B negative donors.

And it will support a nationwide effort to boost donations, as January is National Blood Donor Month. "Your donations truly save the lives of local patients".

Brees, Saints advance by shutting down Panthers late
Two plays later, Brees hit former Panther Ginn with the 80-yard touchdown pass that gave New Orleans a 7-0 lead after one quarter. Newton missed a play, the Panthers punted, and then Newton returned on the team's next possession.

Every blood donation can be a life-saver for people in hospitals across the state, Michigan Blood stated.

Type O negative: The blood type that can be transfused to nearly everyone and is what doctors reach for in trauma situations.

Platelets are primarily used in the treatment of patients undergoing chemotherapy. Donors can save about 20 minutes by completing their health history the day they donate using Donor Pass at

Eligible donors must be in good health, at least 17 years old and weigh at least 115 pounds. Blood donors should bring photo ID.
