Brokenshire resigns as Northern Ireland Secretary

She was making her first comments just hours after being given the job by British Prime Minister Theresa May following the resignation on health grounds of her predecessor James Brokenshire.

The assembly has not met since last March, with Brokenshire involved in trying to broker peace between the two sides to avert a return of direct rule from Westminster over Northern Ireland.

He resigned from the Cabinet in January 2018 as Theresa May carried out a sweeping reshuffle of ministers - but why did he step down?

Explaining his decision, a source close to Mr Brokenshire, 50, said: "He has a small lesion on his right lung and is getting major surgery in the next couple of weeks".
