USA faces criticism at UNSC for exploiting situation in Iran

"In the end, the Iranian people will determine their own destiny, and let there be no doubt whatsoever, the United States stands unapologetically with those in Iran who seek freedom for themselves, prosperity for their families and dignity for their nation", Haley said.

Iran's United Nations envoy, who was sitting in on the session despite not being a council member, agreed, calling Friday's session an "abuse of its [the U.S.'s] power as a permanent member, and an abuse of the council itself".

The UNSC rebuffed the US' naked attempt to hijack its mandate.

He said the majority emphasised the need to fully implement the nuclear deal and to refrain from interfering in the affairs of other countries, writing: "Another FP (foreign policy) blunder for the Trump administration".

"We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked", Haley said in a. Haley said the U.S. had negotiated a $285 million reduction of the United Nations budget for 2018-2019 compared to the budget for 2016-2017.

"It is unfortunate that despite the resistance on the part of some of its members, this council has allowed itself to be abused by the current U.S. administration in holding a meeting on an issue that falls outside the scope of its mandate", Khoshroo said.

There is no evidence that Washington had any direct role in orchestrating the anti-government protests, beyond the encouragement through social media and published remarks.
