Triple Talaq Bill Pushed Back As Winter Session Ends

The BJP MPs have been repeatedly saying that any issue that needs to be raised on the bill should be spoken on the floor of the House and discussed in the presence of the entire Rajya Sabha, she claimed.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017 seeking to criminalise instant divorce, triple talaq, is likely to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

The Government rejected the Opposition's demand that before any other Legislative business, the House first take up an amendment for referring the Bill to a Select Committee.

The Centre said it is committed to pass the legislation while the Opposition Congress blamed the BJP and its government's ministers for creating a ruckus in the Rajya Sabha so that "Parliament scrutiny" of the Bill gets sabotaged.

The triple talaq bill is now pushed to the Budget Session which is expected to start within a month.

The united opposition primarily voiced concern over the provision for a jail term.

The Opposition has stuck to its demand that the Bill be referred to a select committee, while the government has accused parties of "double standards" as they supported it in the lower House. Last week, the Lok Sabha passed the Triple Talaq bill which was then forwarded to the Rajya Sabha where the government lacks majority.

Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh said the people of the country were "watching" how the Congress was stalling the bill.
