Eleven bodies recovered from avalanche site in JK

Ten bodies were recovered from avalanche site at Khooni Nallah near Sadhan Top on the Kupwara-Tangdhar road in Kupwara district where a passenger vehicle was hit by a huge avalanche of snow, trapping seven persons.

Police official told Kashmir Life over the phone that rescue operation is going on to trace out the missing people.

Earlier on Friday, two among the 12 passengers rescued from the spot were identified as 10 year old boy, Rashid Naseer Parray of Sulaiman Tangdarh and Ghulam Nabi Bhat, son of Ali Muhammad Bhat of Kupwara.

An officer of the Indian Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was among those killed after his vehicle was swept away in the avalanche at Sadna Top, a risky ascent point along the Kupwara-Tangdhar highway.

He said police, army, SDRF and local volunteers were taking part in the rescue operation. He was immediately shifted to hospital for treatment.

Locals protested against the authorities, demanding construction of a tunnel to avoid frequent accident on the Kupwara-Tangdhar road, particularly at Sadhna top.

The driver Zahoor Ahmad Khan s/o Maqsood Ahmad Khan r/o Chetarkote, Karnah, jumped in the nick of time while as the vehicle was swept away by the avalanche, taking with it the six persons travelling in it. An official statement said that she has directed the Kupwara district administration to ensure all possible medical assistance to those injured in the accident. Conveying sympathies with the bereaved families, the Minister prayed for peace to the departed souls.
