Customs outage causes delays at airports

According to the standed passengers, the delay was because the computer system to check passports, operated by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, had failed.

While Customs said its systems were restored by about 10 p.m., airports warned passengers to expect delays tonight. It wasn't just a problem at JFK, a similar scene unfolded at Miami International Airport.

The outage on Monday night affected airports including New York's JFK, San Francisco and Denver, as worldwide travellers arrived from holiday travels on New Year's Day, reports CNN.

Several airports Tweeted out warnings to passengers, like this one, from Dallas-Fort Worth: "Good evening, there is a system issue affecting processing times for customs".

CBP said travelers at "some ports of entry experienced longer than usual wait times".

"All airports are back on line after a temporary outage of #CBP's processing systems", the agency said in a Tweet. The brief outage's after-effects are still being felt at some airports and delays are expected.

"No one has been getting past JFK Airport immigration for the last hour". "CBP officers continued to process worldwide travelers using alternative procedures at affected airports".

A spokesperson tells CBS News that Customs and Border Patrol has been contacted and are investigating. No indication the disruption was malicious in nature.
