United Blood Services donations drop as temperatures plummet

On Dec. 16, 2017 Canadian Blood Services put out a call for more blood donors over the holiday season, saying 35,000 open appointments needed to be filled across Canada before January 6, 2018.

Canadian Blood Services will open its clinic at Eau Claire Market on New Year's Day, allowing the refugees to give blood and help with what is often a slow time for blood donations over the Christmas holidays. Travel, family activities and changes in routines pose challenges to blood collections, especially the last half of December into the New Year.

Many southern Albertans are enjoying some down time this season, but Canadian Blood Services wants to remind prospective donors that the demand for blood never takes a break.

Jhoanna Delrosario, Canadian Blood Services territory manager who helped organize the event at Eau Claire, said the refugees who will give on New Year's Day are making an important impact.

As the temperatures drop, so do blood donations.

United Blood Services strives to keep a five-day supply of every blood type at all times.

The giving of gifts over the holiday season can result in the giving of life getting lost in the shuffle.

The need for platelets, it adds, is pressing and ongoing: patients with serious bleeding or those undergoing cancer treatments rely on platelet donations.

"I donate for several reasons", said Joe Michielson, a donor at the Lethbridge blood clinic. During bad weather, more trauma accidents seem to happen and there's a need for more blood. "It's easy to sign up and book your first appointment online or via our mobile phone app".

When you donate you sit back in a comfy chair and let the staff do their job. Donors with O-negative blood are part of a select group whose donations are compatible with everyone.
