The sanctions also order the repatriation of North Korean workers sent overseas to earn much-needed revenue for Kim's regime. The department says Kim Jong-sik, a veteran rocket scientist, is a key figure responsible for advancing the program to a point where the regime is successfully testing ICBMs capable of reaching the US mainland.

"Treasury is targeting leaders of North Korea's ballistic missile programs, as part of our maximum pressure campaign to isolate the DPRK and achieve a fully denuclearized Korean Peninsula", said Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

The U.S. sanctions followed new punitive measures imposed Friday on North Korea by the United Nations.

Solid-fuel missiles can be fired on shorter notice as they do not have to be fueled prior to launch.

The U.S. Treasury said in a statement Tuesday the two officials, Kim Jong Sik and Ri Pyong Chol, are being singled out for pushing forward with producing weapons of mass destruction. The resolution put a cap on the country's crude oil imports and limits imports of refined oil products.

North Korea's state-run media are urging citizens there to fervidly study their leader's recent speech calling for a war against antisocialist phenomenon.

North Korea is "deliberately undermining regional peace and stability", the council said Tuesday when it rebuked the missile test, reiterating demands for the country to halt its ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs.

"Through various channels, we've recently learned that the North has completed a new satellite and named it Kwangmyongsong-5", a South Korean government source revealed. The test was Pyongyang's third ICMB test this year and its 20th ballistic missile launch of this year.

The North Koreans also called western hopes of an end to Pyongyang's nuclear program a "pipe dream".

The department also sanctioned Ri Pyong Chol, who it said was "reported to be a key official" in the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The North Korean regime is believed to use a complex network of front companies to do business in China and other countries to dodge the economic restrictions.
