First AC local train starts in Mumbai

Mumbai: India's first air-conditioned local train, stretching between Mumbai's Churchgate and Virar station, was launched on Monday.

Charting out the train's operational routine, a WR statement said that out of 12 services of the AC local train, eight will run as fast local trains between Churchgate and Virar, stopping only at major stations like Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, Borivali, Bhayander & Vasai Road in both directions.

"The train will not operate on Saturdays and Sundays as it requires maintenance", he said, adding that the 12 services of the AC train will replace the existing 12 non-AC services.

The coaches will carry approximately 6,000 commuters per rake.

The AC train has been categorized as a "premium train with low frequency" and the fare has been pegged at 1.3 times the prevailing first-class fare.

Long queue at ticket counter in Churchgate as several AVTM machines were disfunctional as system getting updated for AC local train ticketing on Monday. It would later increase to Rs 221, based on fare calculation model. For the initial six months, users will get discounts on weekly, fortnightly and monthly passes. "Remaining personnel will be posted at each railway stations to ensure that commuters board the train without any hurdle", said an RPF official. In its first week, the Mumbai AC local, will ferry passengers from Churchgate to Borivali, and from Churchgate to Virar from next week onwards. Also, fourth and seventh coaches will have seats reserved for differently-abled passengers.
