Rahul returns to Gujarat, visits Somnath Temple

Rahul was accorded a warm welcome by the Congress workers as he reached the temple who garlanded him.

"If the Congress in Gujarat believes that it can win the elections, we will win".

On November 29, a massive controversy erupted after Rahul Gandhi's name was allegedly mentioned in the non-Hindu visitor book of the Somnath temple.

Sensing the damage the news could do in the majority Hindu state, Gujarat, during the elections, the Congress came up with a claim that Rahul is a janeu-dhari (the one who wears Brahminical thread) Hindu.

"Members expressed concern about the (standards of) decency in public discourse and political morality in democracy if the Prime Minister himself stooped so low as to accuse his predecessor of anti-national activities", Congress communications chief Randeep Surjewala said.

On December 12, Prime Minister Modi and Rahul Gandhi visited temples in Gujarat with the twin goal of seeking blessings and wooing voters.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi visited the Somnath temple again on Saturday ahead of a review meeting with newly-elected MLAs and party workers in the wake of Gujarat assembly elections.

Out of 182 assembly seats in Gujarat, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged 99, Congress won 77 and others won seven seats.

An independent MLA in Gujarat has declared his support to the BJP, which has retained power in the state.

Post elections, the Gujarat Congress organised a three-day conclave, to be concluded on Saturday, to discuss the results and other issues, media reported.

After getting a brief about the outcome and suggestions of the shivir, the Congress president will speak to party cadre.
