A look at Eric Schmidt's 17 years with Google and Alphabet

But he retained a highly influential role at the company and continued to serve in many ways as its public face.

Eric Schmidt has a long and storied career but was able to make a bigger name for himself at Google before he was transitioned as an executive chairman at Alphabet.

Google announced Schmidt is planning on stepping down as executive chairman, and will continue with the company in a technical advisory role.

This also does not seem to be a surprise development, with Eric having kept the top leadership at Alphabet in the loop with his decision. It did not give a reason for the change.

Google - err, Alphabet - has become rather stagnant lately.

Page, in a statement Thursday, alluded to the new generation at Alphabet and Google.

"I'm incredibly excited about the progress our companies are making and about the strong leaders who are driving that innovation", said Chief Executive Larry Page in a statement.

Eric joined Google back in 2001. "It's who is going to fill the void". Schmidt joked he provided the "adult supervision" to the Google team.

Alphabet Inc shares were unchanged in premarket trading Friday. He also provided technical assistance to Hilary Clinton's campaign during the 2016 Presidential race.

While Google and the Other Bets may sound like a hastily named band, "Other Bets" here refers to the money-losing moonshots that Google wisely put at a distance through the formation of Alphabet.

Schmidt's personal life has been the source of widespread speculation. While he is married, he has brought a series of girlfriends to corporate events over the years.

The key outlet for that philanthropy has been The Schmidt Family Foundation, founded by Schmidt and his wife Wendy in 2006.

"If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place".

The company is also in the midst of a nightmare with the European Commission. Google has denied the claim. "Even more so now in the political world that we have in the United States and in other areas of the world".
