FM Çavuşoğlu travels to United States to attend UN's Jerusalem meeting

Palestinian health officials said Abu Thuraya was shot in the head while demonstrating Friday in Gaza amid unrest following President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu will travel to the US on December 20 to attend the voting on a draft resolution rejecting the USA decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital at the United Nations, private broadcaster CNN Türk has reported.

Miroslav Lajcak, the president of the General Assembly, informed all 193 delegations of the emergency session in a letter sent late Monday.

Egypt had put forward the draft at the council which was backed by all 14 other Security Council members in the vote on Monday.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged on Tuesday to introduce at the UN General Assembly the resolution on Jerusalem's status vetoed by the United States on Monday when it came before the Security Council.

Key US allies Britain, France, Italy, Japan and Ukraine were among the 14 countries in the 15-member council that voted in favour of the measure. "We will take note of each and every vote on this issue", Haley wrote.

On Twitter, Ms Haley posted on Twitter that "the U.S. will be taking names" during the vote on Thursday at the 193-nation assembly.

Only 10 such sessions have been convened, and the last time the General Assembly met in such a session was in 2009 on occupied East Jerusalem and Palestinian territories. The draft United Nations resolution calls on all countries to refrain from establishing diplomatic missions in Jerusalem.

Knowing in advance that the USA would veto Monday's Security Council resolution, the Israeli delegation refrained from mounting the kind of intensive lobbying effort it has in the past in such situations.

"Now, God willing, we will carry the resolution to the U.N. General Assembly", Erdogan a joint news conference with the Djibouti's President Ismail Omar Guelleh. She criticised it as an insult to Washington and an embarrassment to council members.

Israel has long considered Jerusalem its capital, but Palestinians have aspired to establish the eastern sector of the city as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

"Jerusalem is a dream that is present in every Jew's heart", the mayor said, "and Trump's decision gives this dream clear worldwide recognition".
