Salvation Army Bell Ringers continue in Murfreesboro and beyond

A young boy grabbed the kettle being watched by Todd Copper, who has been collecting money for the Salvation Army for 21 years despite having cerebral palsy and manning his post from a wheelchair.

"I asked what was wrong and she said, 'The Salvation Army helped me give my kids a Christmas in the past and I promised myself that if I was ever able to help, I would come and adopt an angel myself, '" Whitaker said.

Some of those who gathered outside the Salvation Army's headquarters for the annual hamper distribution. The Salvation Army crews responded within two hours, delivering meals and other supplies to the Reynolds family and other residents whose lives had been upturned.

They are also still in need of toys.

The Salvation Army had used a former auto dealership site on Peters Creek Parkway for years to sort donations and as its hub for its Christmas giveaway to children.

"Right now we're doing pretty well, we pretty much got enough toys probably to cover everyone", said Michael Davis, Coordinator of Toys For Tots in Mesa County. This year, they're helping more than 4,000.

Just over 1,800 children will receive Angel Tree Gifts through The Salvation Army in York City this year, and it's not too late to donate more!

"I'm at Walmart almost every day", said Michelle Jackson. "It's little things like that which we can help with".

Starlene Collins, Manager of the Western Slope Food Bank said, she didn't expect the outcome to be as big as it was. The office is adopting a charity a month and for Christmas they chose to help get presents for almost 50 area kids in need of a Christmas. "We always look forward to distribution days because we know that we're going to see a lot of smiles". According to, programs supported by money from red kettles provide food, shelter, rehabilitation, disaster relief and more.

"This is great for people who need community service hours", she said.
