Death toll from Mogadishu police academy attack rises to 13

Mohamed Hussein said that the bomber who infiltrated Gen. Kahiye Police Academy on Thursday targeted police officers during their regular morning exercises.

A Somali police officer says a suicide bomber has killed at least 10 people at a police academy in the capital.

Soon after the attack, Islamist militant group, al Shabaad claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Al Shabab, which is allied to al Qaeda, has become the most risky extremist group in Africa, carrying out frequent bombings and attacks against hotels, checkpoints and other high-profile areas of the Somali capital. In October, a huge truck bombing blamed on the Shabaab killed as many as 512 people, levelling buildings in the capital's busy Kilometre 5 neighbourhood. The US has been targeting the group relentlessly this year with extensive airstrikes and counter-terror measures.

The U.S. has carried out at least 32 drone strikes this year.

A drone strike earlier this week against an al-Shabab vehicle carrying explosives prevented an "imminent threat to the people of Mogadishu", the U.S. Africa Command said.

The group, which is allied to al-Qaeda, is battling the UN-backed government in Somalia.
