A suspect has been taken into custody after a police officer in San Marcos, Texas, was shot and killed Monday afternoon while he was serving a warrant, authorities said.

According to the release, the officer was serving the warrant with other officers and was wearing a protective vest.

San Marcos city manager Bert Lumbreras said at the news conference that Copeland's colleagues were emotional after the shooting.

The suspect, who was not identified, holed up in a house while officers on the scene called for backup and formed a perimeter around the area "in hopes of getting the assailant out peacefully", Stapp said.

Neighbors of the suspect in the shooting of a San Marcos police officer after an hours-long standoff said that they were horrified to learn it happened so close. He was transported to the Central Texas Medical Center immediately after where he later died.
