Google Maps rolls out two-wheeler mode for motorcyclists in India

This new mode should help motorcyclists get around more efficiently as it shows shortcuts not available to cars and trucks. The theory is that the more the mode is used, the smarter it will become. Some users in India are viewing a new Motorcycle mode or Two-Wheeler mode in the latest version of Google Maps (v9.67.1) for Android. It also provides customized traffic and arrival time estimations. We ran a check to do a real world test of this mode on Google Maps and find the best possible route from our office in Lower Parel to three different locations in Mumbai. Google is rolling out a dedicated two-wheeler mode for Google Maps in the country famous for its traffic and tight roads. However, India is the largest two-wheeler country in the world having close to 18 million two-wheelers sold in the period of 2016-17, representing 70 percent of all registered motor vehicles. Google announced the feature at its Google for India event.

According to Google two-wheeler riders take the help of landmarks to navigate.

Google said it spoke to hundreds of riders and followed thousands of actual motorbike routes to create "machine learning models" that can accurately predict speed and bike routes. The route map, too, has been completely redesigned for two wheeler mode, with more landmarks, as people tend to learn about the routes using landmarks before starting a journey.

So far, this feature seems limited to India only, but it may expand to other areas where motorcycles are a more prevalent mode of transportation.
